About the Nishisakawick Creek
The Nishisakawick Creek starts in wet, forested areas in Alexandria Township. These starting points are called its "headwaters." From there, the creek flows through Camp Marudy Lake and past Camp Marudy. It then continues through the town of Everittstown.
As it travels southwest, the creek passes by farms and developed areas. Finally, it joins the larger Delaware River near the town of Frenchtown.
The Little Nishisakawick
There is also a smaller branch of this creek called the Little Nishisakawick. This part of the creek begins in wetlands in Kingwood Township. It flows for about 4 miles (6.4 km) to the southwest. The Little Nishisakawick mostly travels through farmland before gently flowing into the Delaware River.
What Does the Name Mean?
The name "Nishisakawick" is believed to come from the Unami language. The Unami people were a group of Native Americans who lived in this area long ago. The word is thought to be from "neschi-sakquik," which means "double outlet or mouth." This name likely describes how the creek flows into the Delaware River.
