A Look Back: Nitre Hall's History
Nitre Hall was built around 1805 next to Cobbs Creek. A person named Israel Whelen, Jr. had it built. It was the home for the person in charge of the Nitre Hall Powder Mills. These mills, where gunpowder was made, are no longer standing today.
Inside Nitre Hall: Design and Style
The building has three floors. The first floor was used by caretakers. The top two floors are decorated in styles popular a long time ago, like the Empire and Victorian styles. These styles show how homes looked in the 1800s.
Learning at Nitre Hall
Today, the top floor of Nitre Hall often has different exhibits. It also offers a special program called the "Colonial Living Experience." This program helps visitors learn what life was like in colonial times. Nitre Hall is also close to another old building called Lawrence Cabin.
Visiting Nitre Hall Today
Nitre Hall is open to the public from May through October. It also opens in December for special events. You can visit by making an appointment. There is a small fee to get in, which helps support the building. The Haverford Township Historical Society manages the hall.
Nitre Hall for Schools
The main reason Nitre Hall is used today is for school field trips and group visits. The historical society puts on a "day in the life" show. This show helps fifth-grade students from the township learn about history in a fun, hands-on way.
