Discovering Nix Corner's Past
Early Settlers Arrive
The story of Nix Corner began in 1871. That year, a man named Andrew Nix moved from Germany to Eau Claire County, Wisconsin. He found the area to be a great place to start a new life in America.
Andrew was so happy with his new home that he wrote to his half-brother, John Hubert Nix. He encouraged John to also move to America.
The Nix Brothers Build a Community
John Hubert Nix and his wife, Anna Marie, followed Andrew's advice. They arrived in 1873. Both brothers bought farmland right next to each other in Eau Claire County.
The Nix family were very religious Catholics. However, there was no church nearby for them to attend. So, John Nix decided to build a church on his own land, close to his home.
How Nix Corner Got Its Name
The church John built quickly became important. It attracted other Catholic families living on nearby farms. They would come to John's church for Sunday services.
Because of the church and John's home, the area became a central gathering spot. It grew into a scattered, informal farm community. John's house was located at a crossroads, a place where two roads meet. This important location inspired the name for the community: "Nix Corners," which later became Nix Corner.
