Nixon is a small community located in Edison Township, which is in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It's called an unincorporated community because it's a recognized place but doesn't have its own separate local government like a town or city. Instead, it's part of Edison Township.
This community was named after a famous person named Lewis Nixon. He was a manufacturer and a respected leader in the area.
The Nixon Nitration Works
Soon after World War I began, Lewis Nixon started a very large factory in this area. It was called the Nixon Nitration Works. This factory made chemicals that were important for the war effort.
The 1924 Explosion
Sadly, the Nixon Nitration Works was the site of a huge accident in 1924. A massive explosion and a resulting fire happened at the factory. This event, known as the 1924 Nixon Nitration Works disaster, was very serious. It caused a lot of damage to the area around the plant, and tragically, 20 people lost their lives.
