Plot Summary
The story begins with Tracy and Jay. They are excited for their Easter holidays. But they learn their mom, Carolyn, is in Hong Kong. She planned for them to stay with their grandfather, J.W. Osborne. He is a very rich man in Los Angeles. Neither the kids nor their grandfather are happy about this. Mr. Osborne has had trouble with the kids before. He tries to make sure things stay calm this time.
On the plane, Jay realizes his pet skunk, Duster, is missing. Everyone panics. Mr. Jamieson, Osborne's butler, misses them at the airport. The kids quickly escape in a taxi. At the same airport, two safe-crackers, Duke and Bert, are at work. They are trying to open the airport safe. Bert accidentally locks it after they open it. They have no time left. They run out of the airport. Their escape car has been towed away. They quickly grab a taxi, which Tracy and Jay are already sharing.
At Duke and Bert's apartment, Duke tries to get rid of the kids. But Tracy is a great actress. She makes Duke feel bad for them. So, he lets the children stay the night. What they don't know is that Osborne saw them. He followed them to Duke and Bert's place. Since the kids seemed safe, Osborne left them there.
The next day, Tracy comes up with a plan. She wants to follow her mom to Hong Kong. They decide to send Osborne a fake ransom note. It demands $100,000 by 4:00 pm that day. Meanwhile, Duke and Bert get a visit from Big Joe. He is a local gangster. They owe him a lot of money. Joe tells Duke he has 72 hours to pay him back. Feeling desperate, Duke and Bert go along with Tracy's plan. But they don't get any money. Osborne knows it's a trick.
Tracy doesn't give up easily. She makes a fake call to the police. She hints that a kidnapping has happened. This brings Sergeant Turner into the case. He really wants to catch Duke. Duke is known for his safe-cracking skills. The fake kidnapping also brings Carolyn back to America. She demands to know why her children are missing. Time is running out for Duke and Bert.
After some talks, the ransom amount is much lower. A meeting is set up at the docks. They will exchange the money for the children. However, the police only want to catch the kidnappers. They don't know Osborne knows where the kids are. Duke figures out the police plan. A wild car chase starts through the docks. Carolyn jumps into Duke and Bert's car. She learns her children are not in danger. The chase ends with Detective Longnecker crashing the police car into the water.
Tracy and Jay make it back to Osborne's house. They have also avoided Big Joe. They go into Osborne's safe to hide. But Jamieson shuts the safe and locks it. Duke, Bert, and Carolyn track the children to the house. Jamieson says the children are not there. Carolyn isn't convinced. A sighting of Duster, the skunk, proves her right. No one knows the safe's combination. They have little time before the air runs out inside the safe. It's up to Duke to use his safe-cracking skills. He must open the safe and save the children. Sergeant Turner arrives at the house. He sees Duke saving the kids. He decides not to arrest him. Osborne then pays off Duke and Bert's debts. He also makes up with his grandchildren. Duke even gets to open his own garage. The film ends with a hint of romance between Duke and Carolyn.
