The nodding rattlesnakeroot (scientific name: Nabalus crepidineus) is a cool flowering plant that belongs to the aster family. You can find it growing in the northern central United States.

This plant is a perennial plant, which means it lives for more than two years. It can grow quite tall, up to about 3 meters (that's almost 10 feet!). It likes to grow in places that are not too wet and not too dry, called mesic habitats. In late summer and autumn, it shows off its pretty white (and sometimes yellow) flowers. For a while, this plant was known by a different scientific name, Prenanthes crepidinea, but in 2010, scientists decided to move it to the Nabalus group.

Where the Nodding Rattlesnakeroot Grows

This interesting plant can be found across a wide area in the United States. It grows from the northeastern parts of the country all the way west to states like Minnesota and Arkansas.

In Arkansas, you can spot the nodding rattlesnakeroot in 12 different counties. It's especially common in the beautiful Arkansas Ozarks region.
