Nojack is a small, quiet place in central Alberta, Canada. It is not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it is known as an unincorporated community. This means it is part of a larger area called Yellowhead County. Nojack is located right on Highway 16, which is a major road. It is about 138 kilometers (86 miles) west of Edmonton, a big city in Alberta. The area is quite high up, sitting at an elevation of about 820 meters (2,690 feet) above sea level.

What's in a Name? The Story of Nojack

Have you ever wondered how places get their names? The name "Nojack" has a couple of interesting stories behind it.

Why "Nojack"? Two Possible Stories

One idea is that the area was named "Nojack" because there were no oil jacks around at the time. Oil jacks are machines used to pump oil out of the ground. So, "no jack" could have meant no oil drilling happening there.

However, another story is told in a book called Place Names of Alberta. This book says that a hotel and a gas station were built near Highway 16. The owners got a lot of credit to build these places. The name "Nojack" was chosen because it's a slang term that means "no money." This name stuck, and local businesses kept using it. The name "Nojack" was officially approved in 1974.

Exploring Nojack: Park and Campsite

Even though Nojack is a small community, it offers a nice place for visitors and locals to enjoy nature.

Nojack Park and Campsite

Just north of the main settlement, you will find the Nojack Park and campsite. This park is located along Highway 751. It's a great spot for people who enjoy camping or spending time outdoors. Campsites often provide a chance to relax, have picnics, and enjoy the natural beauty of Alberta.
