Non-Nuclear Futures: The Case for an Ethical Energy Strategy is a book from 1975 written by Amory Lovins and John H. Price. It talks about why people disagree on nuclear power. The authors say it's not just about technical facts, but about different personal beliefs or 'values'.

They explain that a society using a lot of energy often has certain values. But a different way of thinking, which uses less energy, focuses on things like saving money, keeping things simple, having many choices, being good neighbors, making things by hand, and being humble.

Understanding Energy Choices

Lovins and Price suggest that these two different sets of personal values lead to two very different ways of planning for future energy.

The High-Energy Path

One path is called "high-energy nuclear." This way of thinking focuses on:

  • Using a lot of energy.
  • Getting much of that energy from nuclear power.
  • Having large, central power plants that send electricity everywhere.

The Lower-Energy Path

The other path is called "lower-energy, non-nuclear." This approach focuses on:

  • Using less energy overall.
  • Avoiding nuclear power.
  • Using smaller, local energy sources (decentralized).
  • Relying less on electricity.
  • Using "softer technology" which means energy sources that are simpler, renewable, and better for the environment.
