Nonnenhorn is a charming town in Bavaria, Germany. It is one of only three Bavarian towns located right on the beautiful Lake Constance. This air health resort and famous wine town sits between Wasserburg (Bodensee) and Kressbronn am Bodensee. Nonnenhorn is part of the Swabian district of Lindau.

Geography of Nonnenhorn

Nonnenhorn is located in the Allgäu region. It is situated directly on the shores of Lake Constance. This large lake forms part of the border with Austria and Switzerland.

History of Nonnenhorn

The history of Nonnenhorn dates back many centuries. In the year 926, it is said that some nuns traveled from Nonnenhorn to the nearby town of Wasserburg.

Changes in Ownership

Over time, Nonnenhorn changed hands several times. In 1592, the powerful Fugger family, who were earls from Kirchberg-Weißenhorn, gained control of Wasserburg. This also included Nonnenhorn. Later, in 1763, the Fugger family's authority became part of Austria.

However, this changed again in 1805. After the peace treaties of Brünn and Preßburg were signed, Nonnenhorn became part of Bavaria. The modern municipality was officially formed in 1818. This happened during Bavaria's administrative reforms.

The Historic Kapellenplatz

The Kapellenplatz is the old heart of Nonnenhorn. Here you will find St. Jacob's Chapel, which was built in the 15th century. This chapel, along with the square and nearby buildings, is a protected historic monument.

A major attraction in Nonnenhorn is a giant tree. It is a Giant Sequoia that was planted in 1880. This impressive tree stands next to the chapel. The entire area, including the Sequoia, is protected by Bavarian law.

In 2019, a branch of the old tree fell during a strong storm. The town council then asked for permission to remove the tree. Even though the tree was mostly healthy, removing it would make renovating the square easier. The town decided to remove the tree to ensure safety and allow for renovations.
