Norbury is a place located in Greater Manchester, England. For many years, it was known as a 'civil parish' within the county of Cheshire. Today, Norbury is part of the larger area called Hazel Grove, which belongs to the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport.

Norbury: A Look at Its History

Norbury has an interesting history, especially how its local government and boundaries have changed over time. Understanding these changes helps us see how places in England are organized.

What is a Civil Parish?

A civil parish is a small local area that has its own local government. Think of it as a small community with some power to manage its own affairs. These parishes have been around for a long time in England.

How Norbury's Local Government Changed

In 1875, Norbury was one of eight civil parishes in Cheshire that became part of the Stockport rural sanitary district. This was a way to manage things like public health and sanitation in the countryside.

Later, in 1894, Norbury became part of the Stockport Rural District. A rural district was a type of local government area that covered several parishes in the countryside.

Norbury Joins Hazel Grove

Big changes happened in 1900. The Norbury civil parish was officially ended, or 'abolished'. At this time, Norbury became part of a new, larger area called the Hazel Grove and Bramhall civil parish. This new area was also an 'urban district', which meant it had a local government for more built-up areas.

Then, in 1974, the Hazel Grove and Bramhall urban district was also abolished. Since then, Norbury has been part of the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport. This is a larger type of local government area within Greater Manchester, which was created to manage bigger towns and cities.
