Nordhausen is a special area in Thuringia, Germany. It's like a county or a district, and it's the most northern one in Thuringia. A Landkreis is a type of local government area in Germany.

How Nordhausen Was Formed

The Nordhausen district was first created in 1815. This happened when a new part of Prussia called Saxony was set up. Over the years, the borders of the district changed many times. By 1952, some towns and villages joined the district, while others moved to different areas.

Nordhausen's Coat of Arms

Coat of arms The coat of arms for Nordhausen tells a story. The red and silver checkered part comes from the old County of Hohenstein. This was a historical area that Nordhausen used to be a part of. The tree trunk on the coat of arms shows the damage the city of Nordhausen suffered during World War II. The new branch growing into the golden area represents the city being rebuilt and looking forward to a bright future.
