The Nelson Museum in 2012

The Nelson Museum was a special place in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, that taught visitors all about the famous Admiral Horatio Nelson. It was located in an old, important building and was open from 2002 until 2019. The museum had to close because it didn't have enough money and fewer people were visiting. Its large collection of over 2,000 items, including some of Nelson's own letters, was carefully put away into storage.

What Was the Nelson Museum?

The Nelson Museum was a small museum found in a beautiful old Georgian house on South Quay in Great Yarmouth. This building is very old and important, officially called a Grade II listed building. The museum started thanks to a local farmer named Ben Burgess, who loved collecting things related to Admiral Nelson.

Opening and Exhibits

The museum officially opened in 2002. A very important person, the Duke of Edinburgh, was there for the opening. The museum was a place to learn about Admiral Horatio Nelson's life and adventures. It had different areas called galleries, where you could see many interesting items. Every two years, the museum would also create a brand new special exhibition. For younger visitors, there were fun, interactive displays and games to help them learn.

Why the Museum Closed

Sadly, the Nelson Museum closed its doors in October 2019. This happened for two main reasons: not as many people were visiting, and the local council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, stopped providing money to help run it. When the museum closed, its amazing collection of more than 2,000 items was carefully packed away. This collection included a painted picture of Nelson and some of his actual letters.

The Museum Building's History

The building where the Nelson Museum was located is a historic Georgian house. It is a Grade II listed building, meaning it's protected because of its special history and architecture.

Past Uses of the Building

This old house has had many different uses over the centuries. In the 1600s, it was the home of a person named Sir George England. Later, it was used as a police headquarters, a place where police officers worked. At another time, it was a drapers shop, which sold fabrics and clothing.

What's Happening Now

After the Nelson Museum closed, an art gallery used the building until 2023. In 2024, the Great Yarmouth Borough Council decided on new plans for the building. The plan is to turn the building into a cafe, an art gallery, and a shop. There will also be two art studios built in the garden area. The upper floors of the building are planned to become an apartment.
