History of Normanby Hall
The Normanby Hall you see today was built between 1825 and 1830. A famous architect named Robert Smirke designed it. He built it for Sir Robert Sheffield. The Sheffield family has lived on this land since 1539! They even had important titles like Dukes of Buckingham and Normanby and Sheffield baronets. This new hall replaced an older building from the 1600s.
From Normanby to Buckingham Palace
One important member of the family was John Sheffield. He became the Duke of Buckingham and Normanby in 1703. He built a very grand house in London called Buckingham House. His son, the second Duke, later sold this house to King George III. Today, that house is known worldwide as Buckingham Palace!
Changes and New Life
The hall was made even bigger and changed a bit between 1906 and 1908. These updates were designed by an architect named Walter Brierley.
The Sheffield family moved out of Normanby Hall in 1963. Now, the North Lincolnshire Council takes care of the hall. The large area around the hall, which is about 350 acres (1.4 square kilometers), is now a fun country park.
What You Can Find at the Park
At Normanby Hall Country Park, there's lots to explore! You can find a restored Victorian walled garden where plants grow beautifully. There's also a farming museum to learn about old farm life. You can see duck ponds, a special area for deer called a deer sanctuary, and a lake for fishing. There's even a miniature railway that you can ride! In the stableyard, you'll see a life-size sculpture of a horse and rider by Harold Gosney.
A Famous Connection
Samantha Cameron, who is married to the former Prime Minister of the UK, David Cameron, grew up on this estate. She is the elder daughter of the eighth Baronet of the Sheffield family.
