Normanda is a small, unincorporated community located in Tipton County, Indiana. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, but it still has people living there. Normanda is part of Jefferson Township.
History of Normanda
Normanda was officially mapped out and planned in 1849. This process is called "platting." The land owners who started the community were M.P. Evans, Edward Jackson, and Matthew Jones.
In the early days, M.P. Evans built the very first house in Normanda. It was a "frame house," meaning it was built with a wooden frame. Soon after, in 1850, J.C. Vandevender opened the first store. He sold many different items that people needed.
Around the same time, a church called the Presbyterian Church of Tipton was started in Normanda. However, it later closed down. It was then re-opened in the nearby town of Tipton.
A big change happened when a railroad was built just south of Normanda. This railroad caused the community's growth to slow down. New towns often grew along railroad lines, so Normanda didn't expand as much. The local post office in Normanda eventually closed in 1921.
