The North Ann Arbor Street Historic District is a special neighborhood in Saline, Michigan. It's a collection of old and beautiful houses that were built a long time ago. This area was officially recognized as important for its history and architecture in 1985, and it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It includes houses at 301, 303, and 305-327 North Ann Arbor Street.

A Look Back at the Neighborhood

This historic district on North Ann Arbor Street is home to 22 unique houses. It also has 11 barns and carriage houses. These buildings are all found along one block of Ann Arbor Street. The houses were built between the 1870s and the early 1900s. Most of them show popular building styles from that time. These include Gothic Revival, Colonial Revival, and Queen Anne designs. Most of these homes are two stories tall and are covered with wood siding.

Interesting Homes in the District

Many homes in the district have unique stories and features. Here are a few examples:

  • Charles Cool House (303 N. Ann Arbor)

This house was built in 1910 by a local builder named Elwood Rogers. It was made for Charles Cool, who owned a grain elevator. This home mixes Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles. It has a front porch and special windows called Palladian windows. You can also see decorative shingles and bay windows that stick out.

  • Peter W. Weienett House (308 N. Ann Arbor)

Built in 1892, this house belonged to Peter Weienett. He was a local farmer and businessman. The house stands out with sunburst designs and shingle decorations on its gables. It also has a bay window and two beautiful porches in the Eastlake style.

  • 318 N. Ann Arbor

This L-shaped building was constructed around 1880. It has wood siding and a steep, gabled roof with a dormer window. The windows are rectangular with pointed tops. A front porch was added to the house in the 1920s.

  • Egbert P. Harper House (319 N. Ann Arbor)

This house was built in 1891 by Charles Sauer for Egbert P. Harper. Mr. Harper was a State Senator and a sheep farmer. This home is a great example of Queen Anne architecture in Saline. It features a square tower on the corner and a covered "widow's walk" on the roof. It also has a central eyebrow dormer and pretty shingle patterns along the roofline. A wraparound porch was added around 1912.

  • Edwin W. Ford House (322 N. Ann Arbor)

This Queen Anne style house was built around 1879 for Edwin W. Ford, who sold lumber. It's a two-story, T-shaped home with wood siding. It has an Eastlake style porch on the side. A front porch was added sometime after 1929.
