North Arm is a small community located in the Falkland Islands. It is found in Lafonia, which is the southern part of East Falkland. This settlement sits on the south coast, right by the Bay of Harbours. From North Arm, you can even see Sea Lion Island far away.
In 2007, about 25 people lived in North Arm. Six of these residents were children. It is the biggest settlement on East Falkland south of Goose Green. North Arm is about 90 miles (145 km) from Stanley. Driving there takes about four and a half hours.
Life in North Arm
North Arm has a few important buildings for its residents. There is a school where children can learn. The community also has a centre for everyone to gather. There is even a small shop, but it only opens for three hours each week.
North Arm Farm
The area around North Arm is mostly a large farm. This farm covers a huge space, about 277,000 acres (1,121 square kilometers). For many years, the farm was owned by the Falkland Islands Company. This company is very old and important in the Falkland Islands. However, in 1991, the government bought the farm.
Shearing Sheep
Farming in the Falkland Islands often involves sheep. In the past, sheep were sheared by hand. This means their wool was cut off using hand tools.
However, things changed in the 1893-94 season. The Falkland Islands Company brought in a new machine. This was a steam shearing machine, and it was used at the North Arm farm. This new technology made shearing much faster. Even with this new machine, many other farms continued to shear sheep by hand. This practice lasted until the early 1960s.
