North Bald Cap is a mountain in Coos County, New Hampshire. It used to be called Mount Success. This mountain is about 2,893 feet (882 meters) tall. It is part of the Mahoosuc Range, which is a section of the famous White Mountains.

About North Bald Cap

North Bald Cap sits between two other mountains. To its northeast is Mount Success, and to its southwest is Bald Cap mountain. This area is known for its beautiful natural scenery.

Getting to the Top

Right now, there isn't a marked hiking trail to the very top of North Bald Cap. But adventurous people can still reach the summit! You can follow Ball Cap Road, which turns off Success Pond Road. This road leads to an old "skid road" that was once used for logging. At the end of the skid road, there's a swamp. From there, you have to "bushwhack" to the summit. Bushwhacking means making your own way through the woods where there are no trails.

Climbing and Water

On the northeast side of North Bald Cap, there are rocky ledges. These ledges are a favorite spot for mountain climbers who enjoy a challenge.

The mountain is also important for water. It's part of the Androscoggin River watershed. This means that rain and melted snow from North Bald Cap flow into streams that eventually join the Androscoggin River. Water from the east side of the mountain flows into the North Branch of Horne Brook. Water from the west side goes into the South Branch of Horne Brook. These two branches then meet to form Horne Brook, which flows into the Androscoggin River near Berlin.

The Mountain's Name

North Bald Cap has had a few names over the years! Before 1936, this mountain was actually called "Mount Success." The mountain we know as Mount Success today was called "Ingalls Mountain" back then.

In 1936, the names were changed. Ingalls Mountain became Mount Success. At the same time, the mountain we are talking about, the old "Mount Success," was renamed North Bald Cap.

Many people who live nearby still have a special nickname for the mountain: "Bald Cap Dome." They call it this because of its rounded, dome-like shape. This nickname is said to come from the old days when people worked in the forests as loggers.
