The North Hatfield Historic District is a special area in Hatfield, Massachusetts. It's like a time capsule showing how a small village grew. This district includes old buildings along West Street and Depot Road. Many of these buildings are from after 1848, when the railroad first arrived. The village was important because it was a place where new people came to work. This historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

A Look Back at North Hatfield

Hatfield was first settled a very long time ago, in the 1600s. It became an official town in 1670. For many years, the North Hatfield area was mostly empty land. Farmers started using some of this land in the 1700s.

How the Railroad Changed Everything

The population in North Hatfield began to grow in the 1850s. This happened when a railroad line was built through the area. A train stop was placed at what is now Depot Road. The railroad brought many new people to the area. These included immigrants from Ireland and French Canada. They often worked on the railroad. Some of them stayed and made North Hatfield their home.

North Hatfield became a busy village center. Farmers from all over northern Hatfield brought their crops here. They would ship their goods to markets using the railroad. The railroad also brought important supplies like coal to the farmers.

Village Life and Buildings

Small factories also started up in the village. They used power from the nearby Mill River. Even when railroads became less popular, the village kept going. United States Route 5 continued to be a main road for travel.

The historic district covers about 64.5 acres. It is mainly around the crossings of US 5 with Depot Road and North Hatfield Street. Most of the buildings are simple wooden homes. They were built in a style common for the time.

Some buildings show popular architectural styles. For example, the old post office on Depot Road was built around 1848. It has features from the Italianate and Greek Revival styles. The most important public building was the North Hatfield District School. This brick building was built in 1871 in the Italianate style. Today, it is used for businesses.
