North Island is a small, special island found in the Pearl and Hermes Atoll in Hawaii. It's a tiny piece of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
In 2012, experts from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the island. They found that North Island is about 2.5 meters (or 8 feet) above sea level. This makes it a very low-lying island.
About North Island
North Island is the most northern island in the Pearl and Hermes Atoll. It has a unique comma shape. This island is special because it has plants growing on it. Many islands in the atoll do not have much vegetation.
Just a short distance away, less than 1 kilometer to the southeast, is another small island called Little North Island.
Wildlife on North Island
Even though North Island is small, it is an important home for wildlife. You can often see animals like turtles and seals resting on its shores. These animals use the island as a safe place to relax and warm up in the sun.
The plants on North Island also provide a habitat for different creatures. This makes the island a valuable part of the atoll's ecosystem.
