The North Lake Line was a special train route in Pasadena. It was part of the Pacific Electric Railway system. This line helped people travel around the area until 1941.
History of the North Lake Line
The train tracks for the North Lake Line were built in early 1894. They were put in place by the Highland Street Railway Company on North Lake Avenue.
By 1911, trains coming into Pasadena on this line could continue their journey. They would go all the way to North Orange Grove Avenue without passengers needing to switch trains. This was called "through routing."
In January 1913, the line's path changed. It started going through Mendocino Street to Allen Avenue. A part of the line that went to Country Club Park also became the end of the line that same year.
The way trains were "through routed" changed again in July 1923. Trains on the North Lake Line then connected with the Altadena via the North Fair Oaks Avenue Line. This connection made the route almost like a big loop.
Sadly, the northern and eastern parts of the line were closed on April 3, 1932. The very last train on the North Lake Line ran on January 19, 1941. By 1981, all the old tracks had been taken out or covered over by pavement.
North Lake Line Route
The North Lake Line used to travel on a double set of tracks. These tracks were built into the pavement of Lake Avenue. The line started at Colorado Boulevard and went north to Woodbury Road.
After Woodbury Road, the line changed to a single track. It continued north to El Mendocino Street (also known as Mendocino Street). At this point, the line turned east. It then went to its final stop at Allen Avenue in Altadena.
