North Melbourne Railway Station is a super important train station in Melbourne, Australia. Think of it as a main gate for all trains heading west and northwest! Lots of people use it to switch from one train line to another. It's a busy place where many journeys begin or continue. You can even find public phones on every platform if you need to make a call.
In 1996, North Melbourne became a premium station. This means it has extra services like a small shop (kiosk) and a ticket office with staff to help you. Even though it's called "North Melbourne," the station is actually located in West Melbourne. The main entrance is on the east side, where Ireland Street and Railway Place meet. There's also another exit on the west side, but it only leads to the train yards. If you need to catch a bus, the number 216 and 219 buses stop very close to the station.
Station Upgrades: What's New?
On May 15, 2006, exciting news came out: the station was going to get a big makeover! This project was planned to make the station even better for everyone.
New Entrance and Easier Access
As part of the upgrade, a brand new main entrance was created at the southern end of the station. To make it easier and faster for people to get to different platforms, new escalators, stairs, and lifts were installed. These new features are especially helpful for passengers with disabilities or those carrying heavy bags.
The total cost for this big redevelopment project was $36 million dollars. Before the Victorian State election in 2006, signs at the station said the work would be finished by 2008. However, the completion date was later changed to 2010.
