North Region (Cameroon) facts for kids
The North Region is a large area in Cameroon, a country in Africa. Its main city, or capital, is Garoua. Garoua is also an important port city, the third largest in Cameroon. This means many goods are moved through it.
The most important river here is the Bénoué River. It helps transport people and goods. There's also a big lake called the Lagdo Reservoir. This lake was made by building a dam at a place called Lagdo.
Amazing Wildlife and Parks
The North Region is home to several important national parks. These parks help protect many different animals.
The Bénoué National Park covers 1,800 square kilometers. It is a safe place for many large mammals. You can find animals like hartebeest, hippos, kob, and waterbuck here.
Another park is the Bouba Njida National Park. It is 2,200 square kilometers and sits near the border with Chad. Cameroon created this park in 1968. Its main goal was to protect animals like the black rhinoceros and the Derby eland. The Faro National Park is also located in this region.
How the Region is Governed
The North Region is divided into four smaller areas called departments. Each department has its own main town, or capital.
- Bénoué is a department with its capital city at Garoua.
- Faro is another department, and its capital is Poli.
- Mayo-Louti has its capital city at Guider.
- Mayo-Rey is a department with its capital at Tcholliré.
