North of Scotland Newspapers, often called NOSN, is a company that publishes two weekly newspapers. These newspapers are the John O'Groat Journal and the Caithness Courier. They are read by people living in the Caithness area of the Highland region in Scotland. Both newspapers share one website where you can find their news and stories.
The Two Newspapers
The John O'Groat Journal, sometimes called the Groat, usually comes out on Fridays. The Caithness Courier is published on Wednesdays. This means people in Caithness get local news twice a week!
These newspapers are very popular in their area. The John O'Groat Journal sells about 7,200 copies each week. The Caithness Courier sells around 5,700 copies. This number of copies sold is called the newspaper's circulation.
A Look at Their History
The name "North of Scotland Newspapers" has been used since 1983. However, the newspapers themselves are much older. They have been around since the 1800s!
The John O'Groat Journal first started as a newspaper mainly for the town of Wick. The Caithness Courier began as a newspaper for the town of Thurso. Wick and Thurso were once the only "burghs" in the old county of Caithness. A burgh was like a special town with its own local government.
