Contents
Discover the Depot Museum
The Depot Museum is inside an old train station built way back in 1901. This station was once used by the Cotton Belt railroad. Inside, you can see old papers and photos that tell the story of Pittsburg and the area. There are even items from when Pittsburg started in 1854!
You'll also find old farming tools here. There's a special display about important local people. An art gallery shows off local talent. You can see a wildlife diorama (a 3D scene) and an exhibit about the native Caddo people.
The Amazing Ezekiel Airship
The Depot Museum is famous for its copy of the Ezekiel Airship. This replica was added to the museum in 2001. People in Pittsburg claimed the original Ezekiel Airship flew in 1902. This was a whole year before the Wright Flyer flew at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina!
However, only a few people supposedly saw the Ezekiel Airship fly. They even took an oath to keep it a secret. Because of this, there's no real proof that it flew. Most flight historians don't believe it was the first successful airplane. But some think it might have flown, even if it wasn't controlled.
The full-size replica you see today was built by local craftsman Bob Lowery. He worked with the Pittsburg Optimist Club in 1986 and 1987. They based it on the only photo that still exists. Before coming to the museum, the replica was on display at a local restaurant.
Old Machines and Technology
The Depot Museum also has many other cool old machines. You can see a 1925 American LaFrance fire truck. There's also a Ford Model T, which was a very early car. A surrey (a type of horse-drawn carriage) from 1909 is on display.
You can also explore an 1890s steam engine and an old printing press. The museum even has a working telegraph station! This is how people sent messages long distances before phones. There's also a telephone switchboard from 1894.
Explore the Farmstead Museum
The Farmstead Museum shows what farm life was like in the early 1900s. It has a restored farmhouse from that time. There's also a barn and a smokehouse.
The farmhouse is decorated with furniture from that period. Outside, you can see a demonstration garden. Here, they grow cotton and corn, just like farmers did long ago. The farmstead also has exhibits and shows. These teach you about daily life, work, fun, and how families raised children in the past.
