Northwest Aroostook is a very large, mostly wild area in the northern part of Maine, United States. It's called an "unorganized territory" because it doesn't have its own local government like a town or city. Instead, it's managed by Aroostook County and the state of Maine. In 2020, only 12 people lived here, making it one of the least populated places in Maine!

Northwest Aroostook is a huge area, covering about 6,913 square kilometers (or 2,669 square miles). Most of this land, about 6,810 square kilometers (2,629 square miles), is solid ground. The rest, about 103 square kilometers (39.8 square miles), is water, like lakes and rivers.
What is an Unorganized Territory?
An "unorganized territory" is a place that doesn't have its own local government. This means there are no mayors, town councils, or local police departments just for Northwest Aroostook. Instead, the county and state governments handle things like roads, schools, and safety for the few people who live there.
Townships and Northern Maine
This large territory includes 70 different areas called "survey townships." These are like big blocks of land that were mapped out a long time ago. Part of one township is even shared with Square Lake. The very northernmost point of Maine, known as Big Twenty Township, is located right here in Northwest Aroostook.
