Nostoc Lake is a small lake located in the icy land of Antarctica. It is found about 1.9 kilometers (which is about 1.2 miles) southwest of a place called Mount Provender.
This lake is in the western part of the Shackleton Range, a group of mountains in Antarctica. It's a very cold and remote area!
Discovery of Nostoc Lake
Explorers first drew maps of Nostoc Lake in 1957. This was done by a group on a big journey called the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
This expedition was a major trip across Antarctica. It helped scientists and explorers learn more about this frozen continent.
Why is it Called Nostoc Lake?
The lake was named after a special type of tiny water plant. This plant is called Nostoc.
Nostoc is a kind of freshwater algae. Algae are simple, plant-like living things that grow in water. The explorers found this algae growing in the lake, so they gave the lake its name.
