The Shackleton Range is a group of mountains in Antarctica. It is a very cold and icy place. The highest point is Holmes Summit, which is about 1,875 meters (6,152 feet) tall.

This mountain range stretches for about 160 kilometers (100 miles) from east to west. It sits between two large ice rivers called the Slessor Glacier and the Recovery Glacier.

The Shackleton Range was named after Sir Ernest Shackleton. He was a famous British explorer. He led an important trip called the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition between 1914 and 1916.

Exploring the Mountains

People have explored the Shackleton Range many times. They wanted to learn more about this remote area.

Early Expeditions

In 1956, a group called the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE) saw the mountains from an airplane. The next year, in 1957, they explored the western part of the range on the ground.

Air and Ground Surveys

Later, in 1967, the United States Navy took pictures of the mountains from the air. These photos helped map the area. Then, in 1968–69 and 1969–70, the British Antarctic Survey did more ground explorations. They got help from large US Navy C-130 Hercules airplanes. These planes helped carry supplies and people.
