Notchko is a special place called a locality in Humboldt County, California. It's located right on the Klamath River, about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of a town called Johnsons. Notchko sits at an elevation of 151 feet (46 m) above sea level.

Discovering Notchko

Notchko is found within the Yurok Indian Reservation, which is land set aside for the Yurok people. For many, many years, Notchko was a very important burial site for the Yurok community. It was a sacred place where their ancestors were laid to rest.

The Great Flood of 1964

Like many other places along the Klamath River, Notchko faced a huge challenge during the Christmas flood of 1964. This was a massive flood that caused a lot of damage. Notchko was hit very hard, and many parts of the settlement were destroyed. After the flood, the people who lived there faced difficulties, as they were offered new homes that didn't have all the usual services like water or electricity.
