Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Now means the present moment, the time happening right now between what has already happened (the past) and what is yet to come (the future). It can be a very short moment, like a blink of an eye, or a longer period, like "right now" when you need to make a decision. Sometimes, "now" is used to tell someone they need to act or decide quickly, without waiting.

Here are some examples of how "now" is used:

  • "I want to know what you think, now."
  • "What do you think now?"
  • "Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their country."

Understanding the Present Moment

The idea of "now" is important because it's the only time we can actually do things. We can't change the past, and the future hasn't happened yet. Everything we experience and every action we take happens in the "now."

How "Now" Works in Math

In Mathematics, when we solve a problem or an equation, we usually assume that everything stays the same from the beginning to the end of our calculations. This means that if something is "equal" at the start, it's still "equal" at the end.

For example, if you have 2 + 2 = 4, that statement is true at the moment you start the calculation and at the moment you finish it. The numbers don't suddenly change while you're adding them up.

"Snapshot Algebra"

Because of this idea that things stay the same during a calculation, Algebra is sometimes called snapshot algebra. It's like taking a picture (a "snapshot") of a situation at a specific moment in time. If something important were to change in the middle of an algebra problem, you would have to start over.

This is why it's important to know when information was gathered. Numbers collected in the past might not be true "now" if conditions have changed. For example, if you measure the temperature of a room, that measurement is only accurate for that specific moment. The temperature might be different an hour later.
