Nowlin, South Dakota facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nowlin is a small, quiet place in Haakon County, South Dakota. It's what we call an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes or buildings that doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's usually managed by the county government.

The Story of Nowlin

Nowlin has a short but interesting history. Like many small communities in the past, it once had its own post office.

When the Post Office Opened

The post office in Nowlin first opened its doors in 1890. A post office was a very important place back then. It was where people sent and received letters, packages, and even news from far away. For small communities, it was often a central gathering spot.

Why the Name is Different

The community was named after a person named Henry J. Nowlan, who was part of the U.S. Army. However, when the name was first written down, there was a small mistake. Someone accidentally wrote "Nowlin" instead of "Nowlan." This spelling error was never fixed, and so the community kept the name Nowlin.

When the Post Office Closed

The Nowlin post office served the community for many years, but it eventually closed in 1963. When a post office in a small community closes, it often means that fewer people live there, or that mail services have changed.
