Nozomu Kato (加藤 望, Katō Nozomu, born October 7, 1969) is a Japanese football manager and former player. He is currently a development coach for J3 League team Matsumoto Yamaga.

Nozomu Kato's Football Journey

Nozomu Kato was born in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, on October 7, 1969. He grew up loving football and went on to play professionally. He became a well-known player in Japan.

Playing Days: From College to Pro

After finishing college at Tokai University, Kato joined a football club called Hitachi in 1992. This club later became known as Kashiwa Reysol. He quickly became an important player for the team. He played as an attacking midfielder, which means he helped score goals and set up plays. Sometimes, he even played as a forward, right up front.

Success with Kashiwa Reysol

In 1994, his team, Kashiwa Reysol, did very well. They finished second in their league and were promoted to the top league in Japan, the J1 League, in 1995. This was a big achievement! Kato continued to be a key player for many years. One of his biggest wins with Kashiwa Reysol was the 1999 J.League Cup. This is a major tournament in Japanese football. He played for Kashiwa Reysol until 2004.

Moving to Shonan Bellmare and Retirement

In 2005, Kato moved to another club called Shonan Bellmare, which was in the J2 League. He continued to play regularly for four more seasons. He finally retired from playing football at the end of the 2008 season. He was 39 years old when he stopped playing professionally.

Coaching Career: From Player to Mentor

After hanging up his boots, Nozomu Kato decided to stay in football as a coach. He started his coaching journey at Shonan Bellmare in 2009, the same club where he finished his playing career.

Early Coaching Roles

He worked as a coach for the main team at Shonan Bellmare from 2009 to 2010. Then, he took on a new role, managing the youth team from 2011 to 2012. This meant he was helping younger players develop their skills. From 2013 to 2017, he managed the team at Sanno Institute of Management.

Return to Kashiwa Reysol as Manager

In 2018, Kato returned to Kashiwa Reysol, the club where he spent most of his playing career. He first joined as a coach, working alongside his former teammate, Takahiro Shimotaira, who was the manager. However, Shimotaira was replaced in May 2018 because the team wasn't doing well. Nozomu Kato then became the new manager of Kashiwa Reysol.

Unfortunately, even with Kato as manager, the team's performance didn't improve much. He was replaced in November of the same year. Despite this, he continued his coaching journey and is now a development coach for Matsumoto Yamaga FC.
