Early Life and Education
Nuala McAllister grew up in Belfast. She attended Dominican College, Fortwilliam. After that, she studied at Ulster University.
Political Journey
Becoming a Councillor (2014–2022)
Nuala McAllister started her political career as a councillor. She was elected for the Castle area in North Belfast. This happened during the local elections in 2014. She joined the Belfast City Council.
She was re-elected in the 2019 local elections. She received the most votes in her area. This showed she had strong support from the community.
Serving as Lord Mayor of Belfast (2017–2018)
From 2017 to 2018, Nuala McAllister was the Lord Mayor of Belfast. This is a very important role for the city. She chose 'Global Belfast' as the main idea for her time as Mayor.
Her goal was to show Belfast as a friendly and open city. She wanted it to be a good place for people to live and for businesses. During her term, she spoke out about supporting changes to laws and advocating for fairness. Some people disagreed with her strong opinions. However, her party said she brought a fresh approach to the role. They also said she was a great role model for young women and working mothers.
McAllister also ran for the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2016 and 2017. She was the Alliance candidate for Belfast North. She came close to winning a seat both times.
She also tried to get elected to the UK Parliament in 2019. This was for the Belfast North area. She did not win, but her party's support in that area grew.
Becoming a Member of the Legislative Assembly (2022–)
Nuala McAllister ran again for the Assembly in 2022. She was the Alliance candidate for Belfast North. She received many votes and was elected.
She won the seat that was previously held by another party's leader. This was one of nine seats that the Alliance Party gained in that election. In 2024, she also ran for the UK Parliament again in Belfast North. She came in third place.
Personal Life
Nuala McAllister has two sons. Her partner is Sam Nelson. She was the first "young mother" to become the Lord Mayor of Belfast.
