Type loch

Nuckro Water is a beautiful loch (a Scottish word for a lake or narrow sea inlet) located in the southeastern part of Whalsay. Whalsay is one of the many Shetland Islands in Scotland. This loch is a peaceful spot, known for its interesting history and local legends.

About Nuckro Water

Nuckro Water is found near other important places on Whalsay. It lies to the east of the Loch of Stanefield. You can also find it northwest of a village called Treawick. To its southwest is another area known as Isbister. A main road runs along the eastern side of the loch, making it easy to visit.

The Name and Its Legend

The loch is sometimes called Nuckra, Nyker, or Nyuggle. These names come from an old local story. The legend says that a special water spirit haunts lonely places like this loch. This spirit is known as a "Nuckro" or "Nyker." It's a fun part of the loch's history!

Nearby Historical Sites

Around Nuckro Water, you can find some cool historical spots. Just to the northeast of the loch, there's a disused quarry. This means it was once a place where rocks were dug out, but it's not used anymore.

There are also the remains of a very old house nearby. This house is from prehistoric times, which means it was built a very, very long time ago! It gives us a peek into how people lived in Whalsay centuries ago.

The Old Mill Building

On the southeastern side of Nuckro Water, across the road, you can see an old building. This building doesn't have a roof anymore. It was likely used as a mill in the past. A mill is a place where grain was ground into flour. This old mill was even shown on the first official map of Orkney and Shetland, made way back in 1882.

Stepping Stones

In the southeastern corner of the loch, there are some stepping stones. These stones let you cross the water without getting too wet. They are a simple but useful feature of Nuckro Water.
