Discovering the Museum's History
The Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery was a special gift to the town. A kind man named Edward Ferdinand Melly paid for it. Edward Melly was born in 1857 in Liverpool. He later moved to Nuneaton to work at the Griff Colliery Company, which was a coal mine.
How the Museum Started
In 1913, Edward Melly offered to pay for a new museum and art gallery. He wanted it built in Riversley Park. He had already given this park to the town as a gift. He had plans drawn up for the building. The Museum & Art Gallery officially opened its doors on Sunday, April 1, 1917.
Rebuilding After Damage
Sadly, in 1941, during a war, a bombing raid caused a lot of damage to the museum building. Edward Melly also passed away during this time. Many of the museum's records were lost, so sometimes we don't know exactly where all the old items came from. The gallery was not fully open again until 1960.
