Nurungul Tohti (born 1980) is a brave activist from the Uyghur people in China. She is known for speaking up for her family and community. TIME magazine has even called her one of many activists working for important causes.

About Nurungul Tohti

Nurungul Tohti was born in 1980. She comes from Uchturpan county in Aksu, China. Before she became an activist, she worked as a fruit seller in the city of Dalian.

Her Fight for Justice

In 2009, something very difficult happened to Nurungul Tohti. Her son was taken by others. She bravely went to find him herself and brought him back home.

After getting her son back, she wanted to make sure the people who took him faced consequences. She asked local government officials for help, but they did not give her the support she needed. She kept trying to get justice for her son.

Speaking Up for Rights

Nurungul Tohti even tried to get help from the United Nations. Because of her efforts to speak out, she was held by authorities on June 4, 2012, and was held for eight months.

As an activist, Nurungul Tohti has been held three times while working for justice in her son's case. She believes that because she is part of a minority group in China, she faces unfair treatment. In June 2015, she took her case to officials in Beijing to continue her fight for fairness.
