However, the word "nutritionism" often has a negative meaning.

Nutritionism is a way of thinking about food that focuses only on the individual nutrients inside it. For example, instead of thinking about an apple as a whole fruit, nutritionism might focus on its Vitamin C or fiber content. It treats food like a collection of chemicals. This idea suggests that if you want to be healthy, you just need to get enough of certain nutrients and avoid others.

This way of thinking became popular as scientists learned more about nutrients. They discovered vitamins, minerals, and other important parts of food. This led to the idea that if a food has many good nutrients, it is healthy. If it has "bad" nutrients, like too much sugar or fat, it is unhealthy. The Problem with Isolating Nutrients
One problem with nutritionism is that it can lead to focusing on single nutrients. For example, a food might be advertised as "high in Vitamin C" or "low in fat." This can make people think that adding a nutrient to a processed food makes it healthy. However, a processed snack with added vitamins is not the same as a whole fruit or vegetable. Whole foods have many other beneficial compounds that scientists might not even know about yet.
The Importance of Whole Foods
Many nutrition experts now emphasize eating whole, unprocessed foods. They believe that the benefits of food come from the natural combinations of nutrients and other substances found in them. For example, an orange has Vitamin C, but it also has fiber, antioxidants, and many other things that work together for your health. Just taking a Vitamin C pill is not the same as eating an orange. Eating a variety of whole foods helps your body get all the different things it needs in a balanced way.
