How Nyan Cat Started
The Animated Picture
The Nyan Cat animation was first created by an artist named Christopher Torres. On April 2, 2011, he shared the moving picture (without the song) on his website, LOL-comics. Christopher was drawing pictures, and two different people gave him ideas: one asked for a cat, and another asked for a piece of food. He got creative and combined these ideas to draw the Pop-Tart Cat. A few days later, he turned his drawing into the animated picture we know today.
The Catchy Song
The famous song that goes with Nyan Cat was made using a special voice synthesizer called Vocaloid. It features a character named Miku Hatsune from Japan. This song was then uploaded to the internet, ready to be paired with the animation.
Becoming a YouTube Sensation
Just a few days after the animation was made, on April 5, 2011, someone on the internet known as "saraj00n" put the animated picture and the song together. She uploaded this combination to YouTube and called it "Nyan Cat." Christopher Torres, the creator of the cat, originally wanted to call it "Pop Tart Cat." But thanks to saraj00n, the name "Nyan Cat" stuck and became super famous!

The original Nyan Cat video uploaded by saraj00n was watched an amazing 90,000,000 times by 2013! Its huge popularity meant that lots of other people started making their own versions of Nyan Cat.
People created all sorts of things inspired by Nyan Cat, like:
