History
How Nyirripi Started
Nyirripi began in the late 1970s. Several families, including Tiger Japaljari Morris and Molly Napurula Martins, decided to move away from the busy town of Yuendumu. They wanted to create a new, quieter place to live.
Two men went to find a pastor for their new community, which was called an "outstation." An outstation is a smaller, often remote, Aboriginal community. Pastor John Henwood joined them to help lead the community.
The community worked hard to be officially recognized as an outstation. This recognition helped them get important money for things like buildings and services. Later, Nyirripi grew and was seen as a major community. They asked for more resources, which led to a school being built. In 1985, the community officially became an "incorporated" group, meaning they could manage their own affairs.
