The Division of Lingiari is a special area in Australia that people vote in. It's called an electoral division. This division was created in the year 2000.
It covers almost the entire Northern Territory. The big city of Darwin is in a different division called Solomon. Lingiari is super big! It covers about 1,347,849 square kilometers. This makes it the second largest voting area in all of Australia. The biggest one is the Division of Durack in Western Australia. Lingiari also includes the far-off Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
Why is it called Lingiari?
This voting area is named after an important Aboriginal leader. His name was Vincent Lingiari (1908–1988). He was a member of the Gurindji nation.
Vincent Lingiari worked hard for the rights of Aboriginal people. He is famous for leading a strike in 1966. This strike helped Aboriginal people get their land back. He was a very important person in Australian history.
