OMBIIGIZI facts for kids
OMBIIGIZI is a cool Canadian music project. It's made up of two talented musicians: Adam Sturgeon from the band Status/Non-Status and Daniel Monkman from the band Zoon. Their first album, called Sewn Back Together, came out in 2022. It was even considered for a big award, the 2022 Polaris Music Prize!
What is OMBIIGIZI?
OMBIIGIZI is a special music group formed by two friends who love making unique sounds. Adam Sturgeon and Daniel Monkman are both Indigenous musicians. They combine their different musical ideas to create something new and exciting.
How OMBIIGIZI Started
Adam and Daniel first met in 2018. They quickly became friends because they both loved experimental and alternative rock music. They also shared a common background as Indigenous artists. They talked about working together on music someday.
A little later, Adam met Kevin Drew from the famous band Broken Social Scene. This happened at a special event that raised money for the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund. This fund helps support reconciliation efforts with Indigenous peoples.
In 2021, Adam and Daniel decided it was time to start their music project. Kevin Drew helped them out a lot! He arranged for them to record their music at the Bathouse Recording Studio. Kevin also worked as the album's producer, which means he helped guide the recording process and make sure the music sounded great.
Making Their First Album
The band released a sneak peek of their music before the full album came out. Their first song, "Residential Military", was released in November 2021. Then, "Cherry Coke" came out in January 2022.
Finally, their full album, Sewn Back Together, was released in February 2022. It was put out by a record company called Arts & Crafts Productions. The album was a success and was even longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize, which is a big award for Canadian music.
