Band History

The WHOOP-Szo Years

The band WHOOP-Szo started in Guelph, Ontario, in 2009. It was founded by Adam Sturgeon and Kirsten Kurvink Palm. The band's first name came from a book called I Heard the Owl Call My Name. Later, the band moved to London, Ontario. They added three new members: Joe Thorner, Andrew Lennox, and Eric Lourenço.

In 2014, WHOOP-Szo released a two-part album called Qallunaat/Odemin. This album was inspired by their time in Salluit, Quebec. They spent a year there working with Indigenous youth.

In March 2019, WHOOP-Szo opened a show for the Canadian metal band Voivod. This was part of Juno Week for the 2019 JUNO Awards. In November 2019, WHOOP-Szo released their album Warrior Down. This album was released through You've Changed Records. It was later longlisted for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. The album cover shows Adam Sturgeon's grandfather. He was a survivor of a system that affected Indigenous people in Canada.

WHOOP-Szo planned a tour across North America in 2020. However, they had to cancel most of their shows. This happened in mid-March 2020 because of the COVID-19 restrictions.

Becoming Status/Non-Status

In 2021, Adam Sturgeon announced a new name for the band: Status/Non-Status. This name highlights an important difference in Canada. It refers to the legal terms for Indigenous people as "status" or "non-status".

At the same time, the band released an EP called 1 2 3 4 500 Years. This EP was recorded in 2018 during a trip to Guadalajara, Mexico.

Adam Sturgeon also works with Daniel Monkman from the band Zoon. Their project together is called OMBIIGIZI. They released their first album, Sewn Back Together, in 2022. This album was shortlisted for the 2022 Polaris Music Prize.

On September 23, the band released their second album, Surely Travel. They also released a surprise EP on January 3, 2023. It was called January 3. This EP has three songs that were not included on Surely Travel.
