Discovering Oak Hill's History

Who Built This Amazing House?

Oak Hill was built by a man named George William Dun. He came all the way from Scotland! George settled near Chillicothe in 1838.

Right after he moved there, he started building his new home. The construction of this large house was finished in 1840. It has two stories and was built in the Federal style. This style is like an American version of the British Adam style.

Why Is Oak Hill So Special?

In 1973, Oak Hill was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important because of their history or architecture.

Oak Hill earned this honor for several reasons:

  • The huge, old trees around the house make it feel very ancient.
  • Its outside walls are in amazing condition, better than most other sandstone houses from that time.
  • The inside of the house still looks much like it did originally. It even has some furniture that belonged to George Dun's family!
