Oak Mound, Missouri facts for kids
Oak Mound is a small, historic place in the eastern part of Ozark County, in the beautiful Ozarks region of south-central Missouri, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
History
Oak Mound got its name because of the way the land looked. It was likely a place with many oak trees growing on a small hill or "mound." This name tells us a lot about the natural surroundings where the community began.
A post office was opened in Oak Mound in 1888. Back then, post offices were super important for small communities. They were the main way people sent and received letters, packages, and news. It was a vital link to the outside world. The Oak Mound post office served the community for many years before it closed down in 1932.
Where is Oak Mound?
The area where Oak Mound was located is on a place called Bond Ridge. If you were to visit today, you would find the Oak Mound Cemetery right next to the south side of Missouri Route KK. This cemetery is a reminder of the community that once thrived there. The North Fork of the White River, a beautiful waterway, is also very close by, just a little over a mile to the west.
