The Obi Island Birdwing (Ornithoptera aesacus) is a very rare and beautiful butterfly. It is a type of birdwing butterfly. This special butterfly lives only on Obira Island in Indonesia. It is known for its amazing colors. Even though it is rare, people breed these butterflies. This helps to protect the species and allows for some trade.
The name aesacus comes from Æsacus. He was the oldest son of Priam, a king in ancient Greek stories.
Discovery of the Obi Island Birdwing
The Obi Island Birdwing was first described in 1903. A scientist named Felix Ney gave it its scientific name. He called it Troides priamus Form aesacus at first.
The butterflies used for this first description were collected in May 1902. They were found by John Waterstradt.
What the Obi Island Birdwing Looks Like
The Obi Island Birdwing is part of a group of butterflies called the Ornithoptera priamus group. It looks very similar to other butterflies in this group.
However, the male Obi Island Birdwing has a special feature. Its wings have a bright, shiny turquoise-blue color. This makes it stand out from its relatives.
Where the Obi Island Birdwing Lives
The Obi Island Birdwing lives only on Obira Island. This island is part of Indonesia. It makes its home in tropical rainforests.
Sadly, there has been a lot of logging on Obira Island. This means many trees have been cut down. Because of this, the butterfly's home is shrinking.
Scientists are worried about the future of this species. The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) lists it as 'Vulnerable'. This means it is at risk of becoming endangered. Twenty years ago, it was one of the rarest birdwing butterflies in the world. Even though it is still threatened, people are now breeding them. This helps to keep the species from disappearing.
