The Ocean Wave was a special kind of sailing ship called a scow schooner. It sank a long time ago in Lake Michigan, near Door County, Wisconsin, in the United States. Today, where the ship rests is an important historical site. In 2006, it was even added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's protected because of its history.
The Ship's Story
The Ocean Wave was built in Michigan in the year 1860. This means it was quite an old ship when it sank! On September 23, 1869, the ship was sailing across Lake Michigan. It was on its way to White Lake Township, Michigan. The ship was carrying a heavy load of limestone, which is a type of rock.
Early in the morning, around 3:00 a.m., a big storm hit. The Ocean Wave could not handle the rough weather. It sank, or "foundered," in the storm. Luckily, all the people working on the ship, the crew, were able to survive.
