The Odd Fellows' Cemetery Mound is an ancient earth mound. It was built by Native Americans long ago. You can find it in Ohio, in the village of Newtown. This mound is about 110 feet (33 meters) long. It is also about 90 feet (27 meters) wide. The mound stands about 11 feet (3.4 meters) tall. Experts believe the Adena culture built this special mound.
What is the Odd Fellows' Cemetery Mound?
This mound is a rare piece of history. It is one of the few parts left of a huge group of ancient earthworks. These earthworks were made by early people. Many other similar sites around Newtown have been lost. Luckily, this mound is inside a cemetery. This location has helped keep it safe from harm.
Some graves have been placed near the mound. But these have not caused much damage. There is also a smaller mound nearby. It is called "Odd Fellows' Cemetery Mound 2." This smaller mound has some damage from graves. However, no ancient artifacts were found there.
A Local Landmark
The Odd Fellows' Cemetery Mound has been important for many years. In 1943, a group called the Federal Writers' Project studied Newtown. They noted that this mound was the only one clearly visible. It was a true landmark in the area.
Later, in 1973, the mound was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list protects important historical sites. The mound was added because it holds potential for archaeological discoveries. A few years later, a nearby ancient village site also received this special status.
