Odessa is a special kind of community in Pasco County, Florida, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but doesn't have its own local government. In 2020, about 8,080 people lived there.

Odessa is located northwest of Tampa. It used to be known for its wide-open spaces, ranches, and horse farms. But lately, more and more homes are being built there as Tampa's population grows.

History of Odessa

The Odessa area was first settled in the mid-1800s by the W.M. Mobley Family. They moved there from Savannah, Georgia.

How Odessa Got Its Name

Odessa got its name in the 1880s from Peter Demens. He was a Russian immigrant who helped build the community with the Orange Belt Railway. Demens also started the city of St. Petersburg, Florida. He named both places after cities he knew in his home country.

Early Industries

There was once a big sawmill in the area that gave many people jobs. This large sawmill replaced smaller ones. Sadly, it burned down in a fire in 1922.

Modern Growth

The area is quickly growing as the city of Tampa gets bigger. Odessa was also home to the Tampa Bay Executive Airport until 2004.

County Lines and Mail

The official Census Designated Place (CDP) of Odessa is entirely within Pasco County. However, the mailing area that uses the name "Odessa" for postal services stretches into Hillsborough County. This can be a bit confusing! It means that some homes in Hillsborough County might have an "Odessa" mailing address, even though they are not officially part of the Odessa CDP. For example, parts of Keystone, another CDP, use the Odessa ZIP code. But remember, the actual CDPs of Odessa and Keystone do not overlap.
