Odon de Pins facts for kids
Odo de Pins (born in 1212, died on March 24, 1296) was a very important leader of the Knights Hospitaller. This was a famous group of knights who helped sick people and protected pilgrims. Odo de Pins was their 23rd Grand Master, which means he was their main boss. He led the Knights Hospitaller from 1294 until he passed away in 1296. He took over from Jean de Villiers. Odo de Pins moved the main office of the Knights to Limassol in a country called Cyprus. After he died, Guillaume de Villaret became the next Grand Master.
Who Was Odo de Pins?
Early Roles
Odo de Pins started his career with the Knights Hospitaller in important roles. On October 7, 1273, he became the Draper of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. This role likely involved managing the Order's supplies or finances. Later, on December 28, 1287, he was made the Marshal of the Order. The Marshal was usually in charge of military matters and discipline.
He was chosen to be the Grand Master sometime between late 1293 and September 30, 1294. We know this because he led his first big meeting, called a General Chapter, in Limassol on that date.
Challenges as Grand Master
Soon after becoming Grand Master, Odo de Pins faced some problems within the Order. In 1295, two important leaders, Boniface de Calamandrana and Guillaume de Villaret, wanted to change how the Order was run. They wrote to Pope Boniface VIII on August 12, 1295. They suggested creating a special council of seven people. This council would help the Grand Master, check his decisions, and share important choices with him.
The Pope did not agree to their exact plan. However, he did send Odo de Pins a warning letter on August 12, 1295. The Pope told Odo to fix any past mistakes and to always protect the Order's interests.
His Final Years
It is not fully clear why the Pope and other leaders were unhappy with Odo de Pins. Some people think he might have been too focused on his religious duties and not enough on the Order's daily business. Others suggest he might have been too strict. Since there are not many old documents, we do not know the exact reasons.
Odo de Pins did not seem to follow the Pope's advice. Because of this, the Pope asked him to come to the papal court. Odo de Pins was getting ready to travel, but he passed away on March 17, 1296, in Limassol. After his death, Guillaume de Villaret became the next Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller.
