History of Ogilville

Ogilville has a long history, dating back to the mid-1800s. It started as a small settlement that grew over time.

Early Beginnings: Moore's Vineyard

The community was first established in 1850. Back then, it had a different name: Moore's Vineyard. This name likely came from a local family. In 1850, important businesses opened here. These included a grist mill, which grinds grain, and a saw mill, which cuts wood. A general store also opened, selling many different goods.

First Postmaster and Name Change

Also in 1850, a man named Burris Moore became the first Postmaster. A Postmaster is in charge of a local post office. The community's name changed to Ogilville around 1889. It is believed that the new name came from the Ogilvie family, who were early settlers in the area.

The Post Office in Ogilville

A post office was officially opened in Ogilville in 1893. This was an important service for the people living there. It allowed them to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1931.
