Ohltown, Ohio facts for kids

Ohltown is a small, unincorporated community located in Mahoning County, Ohio. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Ohltown is found between the cities of Youngstown and Austintown, and it's also near the Meander Creek Reservoir.

Ohltown's Past

Ohltown has a long history. A post office was first opened here in 1841. It helped people send and receive mail until 1902. The community got its name from a man named Michael Ohl. He started a mill in the area around the 1810s.

Michael Ohl was a busy person! He ran a saw mill, which cut wood, and a grist mill, which ground grain into flour. He also managed a hotel and was the very first postmaster for Ohltown.

Today, Ohltown is sometimes called a "ghost town." This is because a big part of the old community was flooded in the 1920s. This flooding happened to create the Meander Creek Reservoir, which provides water for the area. Now, only the Ohltown United Methodist Church and a few homes remain from the original settlement.

A Notable Figure

A famous person named James Anson Campbell was born near Ohltown in 1854. He became a very important businessman in the steel industry.
